Welcome to My Wild Yard

Nature has always been a large part of my life. Whether I am exploring in my own backyard or any other natural environment, I always take the time to notice the hand of mother nature at work around me. It could be in the wildlife, plant species, a rain storm, crashing waves, a summer breeze or just the beauty of a natural scene. I find such joy in being able to experience the beauty of nature. As happy as I am to experience it myself, I am worried about future generations. At the rate our wilderness is disappearing, and the native animal and plant species along with it, people of future generations will never get to experience the world as I do today. But it is not to late. One person can only do so much, but together people can accomplish amazing things. By taking notice of wildlife and helping establish habitat in your area, you are making a contribution to the worldwide effort to save the environment. It all starts with you and your own wild yard.

But remember, your "wild yard" doesn't have to end at your property line. It can be any where you experience nature. By introducing you to my wild yard, I am introducing you to my perspective of the natural world. I want you to feel the same wonder I do every time I see a wild animal in its natural habitat. I want you to experience the satisfaction in knowing you have made a difference in the conservation of a rare species, as I do. I want you to start noticing the beauty in every natural setting. Most of all, I want you to fall in love. When you start appreciating wildlife and the wilderness, you will fall in love with it, and you will want to save it. So welcome to my wild yard, I'm glad you're here.

Here are some ways you can help( I will be covering all these issues in the next few months)

  1. Start a bluebird trail
  2. Get your school involved in making and monitoring a bluebird trail. I guarantee everyone there will appreciate it for years.
  3. Volunteer at a wildlife refuge.
  4. Learn about nonnative plants and wildlife in your area  and think of ways to stop this problem.
  5. Plant a butterfly garden
  6. Stop using pesticides and fertilizers in your yard.
  7. Plant  things that benefit native species.
  8. Be concerned about forest fragmentation. That means areas of forest all connected together.
  9.  Volunteer to pick up trash at your local park.
  10. Learn about ways to stop global warming
