Hi Everyone!
I get a lot questions asking about who I am and why I do what I do, so this is the page where you get to know a little bit more about me. My name is Lindsay and I am presently a freshman in college. When at home I live with my parents, my brother and sister, a cat, a dog and a flying squirrel. We live on sixty three acres of land, which seems perfectly normal to me, but the reaction I get from friends is one of disbelief! Sometimes I forget that most people don't live with a forest in their backyard. I am incredibly lucky to have this opportunity. I've gotten so used to it, I don't think I could live any other way!
Besides being addicted to nature, I participate in a number of activities in my school and community. I have played clarinet since I was in fourth grade. In high school I participated in the schools musical, playing in the pit orchestra. I was also involved with the sailing club and literary magazine. I was the Editor in Chief of the teen section of my county newspaper. I love being able to express my feelings, thoughts, and ideas in my writing. It is amazing to think about all the people that read my articles and are affected by them! I love getting email and letters from people who enjoyed my writing. I hope that one day my writing can reach even more people and possibly help make a difference in the world. Now that I am in college, I love being involved with the outdoor education club. I completed the leadership course and now I lead various trips throughout the year, including backpacking, kayaking, hiking, caving, and rock climbing.
My high school had an independent research project, in which interested juniors can design and conduct a research project. The participants work on their projects through the summer and give the completed project to the principal in February of their senior year. I created this website as one aspect of my Cum Laude project. My project focuses on educating people about conservation, and the threats that our environment faces. Conservation is an ongoing mission. We need to educate future generations on the importance of conservation and restoration of natural habitat. In addition to the website, I created a documentary/instructional video on the conservation of bluebirds. The video is designed to people as young as fourth and fifth graders through the steps of establishing a successful nest box trail. It explains general information about the birds, choosing the correct location for the boxes, and information about monitoring the boxes. My hope is that through the video and website, more people learn how to make a difference by protecting our natural world.
As far as college goes, I am unsure about a lot of things. I know that a lot of people change their majors while in college, so I am trying to keep an open mind about it. I have so many options before me, it is hard to pick just one! I am currently a biology major, possibly going premed. I am obviously very concerned with the environment, so sometimes I think a career in environmental science would suit me. As you might also see, I love writing. I will probably end up incorporating writing into any field that I enter. I know I will travel abroad while at college. I have always dreamed of going to Australia, and I think that a study abroad program would be the perfect chance! I am excited to experience the ecosystems and wildlife in Australia.
Whenever my family goes on vacation, we always make sure that there is some new wilderness to explore. Whether it is the coral reefs of the Bahamas, the canyons in Arizona, the waterfalls of New Hampshire, or a beach anywhere along the coast, we love experiencing new natural areas. We always make sure to take pictures where ever we are. Below you can see some of the pictures from our adventures over the years.
There are many waterfalls in New Hampshire, some of which you can actually swim in! This is one of the smaller waterfalls.
